Located amid the business-centric region of Singapore, the building bridges between the back alley of the shophouses are designed as casual spaces for shop owners and visitors to share a space and enjoy the heritage.
Leaning against the end of the 2 rows of shophouses, the structure is inspired by the bare and unfinished look of shophouses undergoing construction, the raw appearance sparks curiosity in passer-by, making them want to experience the internal volume and space that the form brings. The windows also act as entry points connected to the structure, allowing shop owners to control how visitors can use the space as well.
The internal space is divided into 2 paths each to bring a different perspective and experience. One is more regular, straightforward and leads to the main cafe area located between the back alley to allow users to enjoy the casual activity that happens here. The path is more similar to a gallery walk that showcases fixed artworks along the structure.
The other is more irregular, adventurous and links to the rooftop sitting area above the cafe that allows visitors to carry out casual chitchats while being able to enjoy the view between the alley and the roof profiles.
The structure is also a representation of shophouse culture, allowing the space to be a form of urban art, casting the silhouette of human activities onto the shophouse facade. The overall form is a space for visitors and shop owners to set up creative galleries and temporary cafes, making use of the unutilized back alley.
