Designer's Statement

Colourblock aims to enhance the under utilised height and space under the Keppel viaduct. To compliment the surrounding site - busy and loud - the concept of the design is similar to that of a modernised Pasar Malam, or bazaar. The activities and programmes that are complimentary to the concept include food stalls, market booths for small local businesses, and performance spaces for buskers and young talent. The pop of colours contrast against the vastly dull concrete structure of the viaduct, catching the attention of pedestrians and people in vehicles alike.

The design is made up of block modules that are stacked or organized in a rectilinear manner, but are varying in terms of the usage and purpose of each module for the aforementioned programmes. A translucent plastic material is proposed as the shell of the modules to increase the visibility of pedestrians passing by into the spaces of the design. Modular planter boxes are also introduced to maintain the vegetation and greenery that once was on the site.
