Designer's Statement

Situated in the Politics Building, Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 4HQ, the Hardrain Bridge has stood for around 50 years and is classified as a type of Brutalist Architecture. Brutalist Architecture is considered as minimalist construction that emphasizes the bare building material and structural elements over the exterior and interior decoration design. I selected this bridge as the subject for the competition because it serves as the main accessible connection for the University student to access to the library and their home in Jesmond. Being exhausted and tired for the whole school days, the dull colour of the wall surface and dim lighting of the Hardrain contribute to the student stress and worry towards their studies, affecting their studying mood in the library after passing through the tunnel.

Therefore, I decided to recolour the tunnel with the painting to the ceiling and the graffiti on the walls to make a positive vibe for the students. Also, I created a segregated cycle lane to enhance the safety of the cyclists and the pedestrains to minimize any collisions or injuries. Finally, I replaced the illuminating windows to infuse the vibrancy into this Brutalist Architecture, aiming to rejuvenate the students' motivation as they pass the bridge and experience this new atmosphere. It can be found that a connection between that community space and the pedestrain, especially the students, can be built up and strengthened.
