Designer's Statement

This design showcases a pavilion for a primary school in the village of Mikichi, renowned for its lush bamboo groves. The pavilion's concept is inspired by the letter "M," symbolising both the village's name and the warm embrace it offers its children. Crafted from the village's abundant bamboo resources, the structure harmonises with nature, creating a striking yet serene silhouette. This thoughtful design not only honours the village's identity but also provides a cool, shaded retreat for pupils during their leisure time, protecting them from the harsh midday sun. Its open, airy design ensures ample ventilation, enhancing comfort and creating a calming, organic aesthetic. Utilising locally available bamboo, the pavilion stands as a model of sustainable architecture, significantly reducing construction costs and environmental impact. The bamboo's strength and flexibility ensure durability and resilience, making it an ideal material. The pavilion is more than just a shelter; it is a space for community and connection, where pupils can gather to play, learn, and interact, fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging. In essence, the Mikichi pavilion celebrates local culture, sustainable practices, and the potential of thoughtful design, symbolising the village's dedication to providing a safe and inviting space for its children to thrive.
