The birchbark canoe was once the most important vehicle of transportation in the Chicago area during the 18th century, and it was also a crucial tool for DuSable to discover Chicago, stay, and become the first permanent, non-indigenous settler. Historical records show that he established a trading post near the mouth of the Chicago River and owned a canoe. We believe that the partnership between Du Sable and Native American residents represents one of the earliest successful examples of multicultural collaboration in Chicago. Using the Birchbark Canoe as symbol to commemorate Jean Baptiste Point du Sable’s significance to Chicago. Also, it becomes the inspiration to design DuSable Park in our design proposal.
